Living in a hot climate like Dubai’s means that we only get 3 weeks worth of leather jacket wear, so I decided to try my luck at a slightly lighter alternative: a sleeveless leather vest which Isabel Marant started making a couple of seasons ago. This gilet from Michael Kors was a great bargain which I had found on The Outnet, so the idea was to make it less Harley Davidson Club and more Fashionista.
The results were pleasantly surprising: we wore it for a night out bar hopping, toughened up a feminine dress with it and used it as an outer layer for a totally cool urban look. All photos by Tarynn Walker.
The Rock’n’Roll Fashionista look:
We teamed the waistcoat with the best fitting leggings on the planet. a pair of Helmut Lang glossy leather stretch leggings with a long tunic top from 3.1 Phillip Lim and broke up the all-black look with a giant electric blue clutch bag and fierce strappy heels from Zara. We added more edge with a crystal ear cuff by aussie designer Ryan Storer. This look is simply perfect for bar hopping in New York or London’s east end.
The feminine Boho dress with a biker edge look:
We recently bought this wispy chiffon dress by Pam & Gela as a boho daywear staple and found that the leather gilet made for a nice cover up and added a tough edge to the light fabric. The boho chic element came in the form of a crazy leather fringe bag by Monserrat de Luca and a loquet pendant by House of Harlow 1960. We gave the illusion of slimmer ankles with Isabel Marant’s concealed wedge boots.
The Urban Warrior look:
Maximise the layering functionality of a leather waistcoat by layering it over the key pieces of the Fall 14 season: a plaid shirt by Zara and a Parka by H&M, to make it the last piece to add a unique touch to your utilitarian busy-about-town look. Don’t forget the all-essential backpack by Army Of 1 and biker boots for maximum comfort.
